Dachstein round hiking trail
From the Gosau lake, you walk along the south side of the Gosaukamm, visit cosy huts, meet great people and try typical local products. The alpine flora in the Bischofsmütze area is breathtaking. No less charming is the stage of the walk below the Dachstein south face - along the tracks of the Bible smugglers, the path leads to the traditional Südwand hut.
A ride up with the "Sonnenaufgangsgondel" (Sun rise cable car) to the Dachstein glacier (on Thursdays) is THE experience to be had, an for this one needs to start early in the day for hte hike over the "Stein" twoards the Guttenberghaus. Very lonely, but also fascinating, is the hike across the Grafenbergalm to the Stoderzinken. Forests, pastures and great views from peaks can be found on the plateau crossing towards Bad Mitterndorf.
Through impressive naturescapes, past secret karst sources, the trail then leads through the wild Koppentalvalley to Hallstatt. On the Brine Trail at a medium heigh above the lake Hallstatt or in the alpine region over the Krippenstein, the Inner Salzkammergut is crossed towards Bad Goisern. The last stage is steep - the goal, the Goiserer hut, has brilliant views , followed by the descent to Gosau which finishes the journey around the Dachstein.
The day-long stages take about 5 to 6 hours walking time each - they are marked and signposted. Valley huts, guest houeses and mountain pasture huts offer overnight stays. Buses, trains and boat rides offer shourtcuts or alternative routes.
In the Dachstein Round hiking guide, the entire trail is described in detail, with pictures and information about each stage, as well as with some insider tips.
