Salzkammergut Mountainbike Trophy adventure
Those who have visited Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt see this small market community as a place to escape to and enjoy time to relax . But once a year, for just one weekend, the centre of the village is transformed into a bottleneck for a major international mountain bike event - a truly spectacular occasion - the Salzkammergut Mountainbike Trophy!
Mountain bike fans from more than 40 different nations flock to Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt to test their strengths and skills with the best mountain bikers in the world. The route, which covers the entire Inner Salzkammergut, is equivalent in length to six marathons, and the event attracts more than 4 500 competitors.
Mountain biking extreme: 211 kilometers, 7 719 meters of height
An early start is needed in order to complete the challenging 211 km mountain bike tour. By 5 a.m., up to 600 cyclists will have already embarked upon their gruelling challenge. More than half of the competitors will not complete the tour. The phrases „to hell and back“ and „only the strongest will survive“ could have been coined for this event!
The 119 km race begins at 9 a.m.. Up to 1 300 eager competitors line up along the main road through Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt and await starter’s orders. There is also a 53 km race, which attracts a further 1,300 bikers, and these are the most popular events among competitors.
At 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. it is the turn of the amateur cyclists to take it to the saddle. A further event, the 73 km challenge starts in Obertraun. Amateur cyclists and those who wish to enter just for fun are welcome to join in the events too. No special permits or qualifications are required. What matters is having fun along the way.
A very special mountain bike atmosphere
The tension mounts as soon as all mountain bikers have set off as excited spectators gather to see who will be first to cross the finish line. The spectators contribute enormously to the amazing atmosphere which surrounds the entire event, and enthuse about the friendliness and helpfulness of the event organisers. And the fun does not end here. On Sunday it is the turn of the youngest mountain bikers to compete for the Junior Trophy. Children as young as 3 years take their places at the start line; some still on balance bikes and with their cuddly toy attached to the luggage carrier. Older children sense the burning ambition and passion as they begin the race, and all hearts beat faster at the playing of the fanfare at the awards ceremony. There is also an event for unicycles during this same weekend. The Muni-Einrad-Downhillchallenge is one of the highlights, and begins at the Predigstuhl. Unicyclists need around just 20 minutes to complete the cross-country route down to the centre of Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt. A spectacular achievement.
