Navia - Traditional wooden boat trips on Lake Hallstatt

Simple wooden boats known as „Plätte“, „Zille“ or „Mutzen“ are the most traditional forms of transportation on Lake Hallstatt. These boats were, several centuries ago, the sole means of transporting goods on the lakes of the Salzkammergut, and are still in existence today.

Whether you choose a short or longer trip along the lake, you will soon discover more about the  UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt and the history of its wooden boats. The stunning views of the surrounding mountains make for an unforgetable experience.

Unusual design

These wooden boats, on account of their unusual design – main body without a keel and the well defined head – have become a symbol of the region. Traditional boat building techniques have been handed down from generation to generation, and nowadays there are few boat designers who have the knowledge of how to construct these „Plätten“.

Steering these boats is not for everyone. The older boats and those which have not yet been modernised are controlled using just one oar. For those with no experience in steering the boats, first attempts usually result in the boat moving backwards or moving in circles on the lake rather than moving forwards.

Unique opportunity

Visitors to Obertraun can enjoy a trip on the lake on one of these traditional wooden boats today. Choose from a short or longer cruise on either a modern, electric boat or a traditional Salarius boat. Trips are bookable in advance.

Boat trips begin at the “Salinenhafen“ in Obertraun. The short trip transports you to Hallstatt and back, and takes about one hour. Return trips to Bad Goisern via Hallstatt to Seeraunzen with a short stop-off last around 2 hours.

Both trips are available during the summer months several times per day, subject to demand. The minimum number of passengers required is 5, and the boats have a maximum capacity of 12 passengers.
