After the ascent we recommend a stop at one of the cosy huts in Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt before the tobogganing fun begins. You can choose between the new toboggan hut and the Sperrer hut, which are open in winter when the snow is good. History of tobogganing - horn sledges as godparents
The heavy winter carriage of the woodcutters, the horn sleigh, was the godfather here. The cut wood was stored in large quantities above "Rieswegen" (especially the saltworks needed enormous quantities of wood). In winter, the "Holzknechtpassen" sweated uphill with their sledges in order to bring their "Fahrtl" down into the valley in a fast and often dangerous journey. Bloche were hung on the "Halbachsler", in addition still a few "Scheiter" as additional brake, the actual braking effect came however from the "paws" which the woodcutter beat into the occasionally hard frozen snow.
The carpenters and turner produced the first "Schlittengeiße", as they are called in the vernacular, already quite soon then the carpenters and turner. These now belong to every household in the inner Salzkammergut. In 1910 the toboggan run in Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt was reported for the first time and today not only the locals appreciate this cosy winter sport.
