Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the group ventured up the mountain on Maundy Thursday. The first casualties were not found until Easter Tuesday. The search operation was one of the largest in Alpine history, involving over 400 mountain rescuers. The Heilbronn Chapel on the Krippenstein serves as a memorial to the mountain tragedy.
