Hiking in a winter wonderland
And the experience is all the more wonderful when the scenery is as beautiful as here in the inner Salzkammergut. Take a stroll along paths cleared of snow, follow frozen rivers and stream or wander through the snow-filled woodlands. Every keen walker will enjoy time to gather thoughts, far from the stresses and strains of everyday life. A hot cup of tea in a warm inn or in a traditional rustic hut is the perfect reward for all your efforts!
As you can see, winter in the Dachstein region has lots of wonderful attributes, despite the short days. Now it’s up to you to decide how you would most like to fill your days. Here are a few ideas to whet your appetite:
Winter walking in Goisern
There is a lovely, gentle walk along the River Traun. The „Traunreiterweg“ leads us into the Weißenbach neighbourhood. The trail is, of course, always cleared of snow. From the Goisern Bridge close to the centre of Bad Goisern, we follow the rushing River Traun to the Weißenbach Bridge. It takes around an hour and a quarter to complete this easy, even trail which, for many years, has been one of the most popular walking and running trails in the area around of Bad Goisern.
Idyllic trails in Gosau
The trail along the Gosau Stream is idyllic in the winter months. The path is cleared of snow, and begins in Vordertal. 7 km in length, the trail ends by the Gosauschmied Inn. Follow the trail and you will discover the very best of what mother Nature has to offer. All along the way the bushes and trees are covered in frost, and sparkle in the sunlight. From start to finish, this delightful walk will inspire you and leave you with some very special memories.
Winter hiking trails in Obertraun
The Dachsteinhof – Ebnersteg winter hiking trail in Obertraun (marked as trail Nr 2 on the map) is approximately 2.5 km long. The trail passes through snow-filled woodland and leads to the banks of the River Traun and eventually to the Ebnersteg. The Obertraun Upper Level Trail or „Höhenweg“ (trail Nr 1) is one kilometre longer, and from here there are wonderful views down to the village. Join the trail by the evangelical church. The end of the trail is the Reith neighbourhood.
Winter trail through Hallstatt
This trail begins at Tourist Information in Hallstatt and winds its way through the romantic, narrow alleyways of the village to the archeological excavations and onwards to the Hallstatt World Heritage Museum. Following the trail further you will reach the picturesque market square with its baroque Holy Trinity column and the evangelical parish church. The Maria-Hilf catholic church can be accessed via the „covered steps“. From here we follow the „Church Trail“ back to Tourist Information where we started.
