The Catholic parish church in Hallstatt is a beautiful gem in the middle of the World Heritage Site. Together with the world-famous ossuary and the cemetery, it is a must-see for every visitor to Hallstatt.

Romantic church from the year 1181

The small Romanesque church in the World Heritage town of Hallstatt has probably existed since around 1181. The mighty tower from the 12th century still bears witness to this today. The late Gothic period then dared to build over the steeply sloping cliffs and by 1505 the present church was completed, and since 1939 the small parish community and its friends and visitors have been in charge. The Catholic parish church was completely renovated in 2002.

Stolen altarpieces

In 1987, the four Gothic paintings were torn from the small altar of the Virgin Mary in the Hallstatt parish church by an Italian couple and stolen. In between, two of them were probably privately owned and reframed. The other two probably spent the last decades in storage and are therefore worse preserved than the others. During a raid in Italy in 2017, all of the pictures from this unique Hallstatt criminal history were seized. From spring 2018, the former abducted works of art will once again be on display in one of the most beautiful churches in the Dachstein Salzkammergut vacation region.
