We are Dachstein and Salzstein, the mascots of the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut. We are really looking forward to introducing you to our home and experiencing exciting adventures with you on the mountain, in the lake and around the World Heritage Site. Pick up your folding map at one of the 4 tourist offices in the Holiday Region, find the 5 control stations along the hiking trails, punch out the letters and answer the questions. Then you can collect your reward and take part in the competition at the same time.

Have you ever wondered what a raised bog is or why blueberries like to grow there? Which plants are herbs and what can I do with them? Or do you want to find out more about the forest you're hiking through?

Our guides have lots of exciting information for you and will make your hike through the Holiday Region a very special experience.

Get your equipment

Would you like to test your skills on the children's via ferrata but don't have the equipment? At Sport Jirka you can hire the climbing equipment you need to go climbing safely.

 

Can't manage the whole route on your own? No problem.

In addition to jackets and backpacks, your parents can also hire child carriers from the Gosau tourist office.

Prefer to be out and about in a stroller? Then why not use one of the free off-road strollers available for hire at the Gosaukammbahn mountain station and discover the Zwieselalm together. In addition to breathtaking views, the Zwieselalm also offers child-friendly hiking trails.

Yes, many of our accommodations welcome families and offer child-friendly services such as cots or play areas. You can find accommodation for you and your family here. The Dachsteinkönig Familux Resort and the Family Hotel Sommerhof in particular offer a wide range of facilities for children and their parents.

The Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut offers a wide range of family-friendly activities such as easy hikes, children's via ferratas and lakes in summer as well as children's ski areas and toboggan runs in winter. Particularly popular are, for example, the legend trail in Bad Goisern, the Little Bear family via ferrata on the Dachstein Krippenstein or the toboggan run in Gosau.

 

 

For children, the Hallstatt Salt mine or the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave and the Mammoth Cave are particularly fascinating. If you like to find more about the history of the region visit the Hallstatt Museum.

 

Whether the trail through the Koppenwickel in Obertraun or around Lake Gosau, there are several paved trails for the whole family in the holiday region. You can find a list of all paths suitable for pushchairs here.

 

 

Yes, in summer children's climbing equipment at Sport Jirka, child carriers at the Gosau tourist office or off-road pushchairs at the mountain station of the Gosaukammbahn. In winter you can hire ski equipment for children and adults or at the toboggan runs toboggans for hire free of charge. So you can arrive with peace of mind and get the equipment you need on site.

In the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut, you can experience exciting activities whatever the weather. On rainy days, the Salt mine in Hallstatt or the Hallstatt Museum are good Excursion destinations.

 

Yes, many excursion destinations offer special family prices or discounts for children. When you stay 3  nights or more you receive the Salzkammergut Card free of charge, with which you can take advantage of reduced rates. Children under the age of 15 do not need a Salzkammergut Card and can still take advantage of the reduced rates when accompanied by an adult (with a card).

Yes, there are many events throughout the year that are particularly interesting for families. Whether the "Oatna Kiritag" with amusement park or the Meisteradvent in the Hand.Werk.Haus with a children's workshop, children's eyes light up here. A very special challenge is the JOLLY children's hiking challenge where you have to hike to 5 destinations to collect your reward.

Dachstein and Salzstein are the mascots of the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut and represent the region. They not only embody the name of the region, but also its landmarks. With the Dachstein on skis and the Salzstein with a hiking rucksack, they also want to draw attention to the wide range of sporting opportunities that the region offers all year round.

They were created thanks to the JOLLY painting competition 2023, which the tourism association organised with the JOLLY brand. The mascots were selected from almost 400 ideas and brought to life from the drawings of Sophie (12 years), Laura Loreen (13 years) and Vivien (10 years).

Yes, you can buy the mascots as lovingly designed plush figures in the tourist offices in Bad Goisern, Gosau, Hallstatt and Obertraun and take a piece of the holiday region home with you.
