Heilbronn Dachstein Catastrophe

13 people (3 teachers and 10 students) lost their lives at Easter 1954 in a snowstorm on the Dachstein massif. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, the group ventured to climb up on Thursday. It was not until Easter Tuesday that the first victims were found. The search operation was one of the largest in alpine history with over 400 mountain rescuers. The Heilbronn Chapel on the Dachstein Krippenstein serves as a memorial to the mountain tragedy.

The Heilbronner Circular Trail leads to the place where the victims were found in 1954. A simple wooden cross stands quietly in remembrance of that place.
