The small romanesque church in the World Heritage town of Hallstatt should have existed since around 1181. The mighty tower from the 12th century still bears witness to this. The late Gothic then dared to build over the steeply sloping cliffs and the existing church was finished by 1505. Since 1939, the care of the small parish and friends and visitors has been entirely with the church. In 2002 the Catholic parish church was completely renovated.
In 1987 an Italian couple tore the four Gothic paintings from the small altar in the Catholic parish church in Hallstatt and took them away. In between, two of them were probably privately owned and were re-framed. The other two have probably spent the last few decades in a camp, and are therefore less well preserved than the others. During a raid in Italy in 2017, all images of this crime story, unique for Hallstatt, were seized. From spring of 2018 on, the works of art can be seen again in one of the most beautiful churches in the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut.
