The Heilbronn Chapel on the Dachstein Krippenstein serves as a memorial to a mountain tragedy in 1954.
13 people (3 teachers and 10 pupils) lost their lives in a snowstorm on the Dachstein massif at Easter 1954 . Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the group ventured up the mountain on Maundy Thursday. The first casualties were not found until Easter Tuesday. The search operation was one of the largest in Alpine history, involving over 400 mountain rescuers. The Heilbronn Chapel on the Krippenstein serves as a memorial to the mountain tragedy.
The Heilbronn circular hiking trail takes you to the spot where the victims were found in 1954. A simple wooden cross stands silently in memory of the site.
