The classic crossing on the Dachstein plateau
The best way to get an impression of the Dachstein plateau is on a scenic crossing over old paths that people have been walking on for thousands of years. Starting from Krippenstein-Oberfeld, we follow the historic path that Schladming farmers used to drive their cattle to the high alpine pastures. We hike through the extensive karst landscape "Am Stein", which has been shaped by the ice ages. The path winds up and down through wildly rugged Dachstein limestone, mountain pine forests, shallower and deeper karst hollows and over gentle hills that invite you to linger and enjoy the view. Only shortly before the Feisterscharte (2198 m) between Eselstein and Sinabel do you come across rope safety devices. They give the undertaking an alpine feel, but can be easily overcome on the ascent. This takes us to the Guttenberghaus (2146 m) with magnificent views of the Enns Valley and the Tauern mountains. It is the easternmost Alpine Club hut on the Dachstein and, at 2,146 m above sea level, the highest refuge in Styria.
After an extensive rest in the hospitable hut, we continue our way down into the valley. We follow countless hairpin bends on gravel paths first through the Tiefkar to the Lärchboden, where we meet the gravel road. Our cab bus awaits us at the Feisterer organic hotel and restaurant, which serves organic produce from its own farm, to take us back to Obertraun .
From July to October, the Obertraun Mountain Experience offers everything from guided family hikes to high alpine tours on the Dachstein Krippenstein. Experience unique moments at over 2,000 meters on sunrise and full moon tours. Enjoy the view of the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut World Heritage region from the 5fingers.
