Sunrise Excursions on the Dachstein Krippenstein
The cable car terminus was built in the 1950s, surrounded by woodland, on a small elevation just outside Obertraun. In the darkness the headlights of the cars shine like bright lights in the woodland as nature lovers assemble in the darkness by the cable car terminus.

... of the mountain gondola sway gently as we make our way up to the summit. On the horizon, mountain summit after mountain summit begin to glow red. As we reach 2.100 m above sea level, you might ask yourself where the word „Morgengrauen“ (morning gray) comes from. It is more like a „morning red“ which becomes stronger and brighter as the sun rises like a giant red fire ball. At this moment the sun is so bright you can still see it with your eyes closed. If you turn your back on the sun and look towards the Dachstein, the view is equally as impressive. One by one, the summits of the Dachstein, the glacier, the Dirndln, the Koppenkarstein and many others become visible, bathed in gentle sunlight. A new day has begun, a little cloud hovers gently over the Dachstein massif, and just behind are little shadows.

Full moon rides on the Dachstein Krippenstein
So that even the late risers have a chance to experience the change of day and night, there is a counterpart and special feast for the eyes: the full moon rides. During these rides the Obertrauner Weisenbläser (traditional music band) hike to the "5fingers" and under their sounds the hikers first watch how the sun slowly disappears behind the mountain peaks, while the moon in all its full round splendour slowly claims the night sky for itself.
The silver rays of the moon have enough power to make the way back and to bathe the Dachstein summit and its glacier in subdued light. Very atmospheric is therefore the nocturnal hike, where the evening continues comfortably with a rest stop. The crowning finale is then the descent with the Dachstein-Krippenstein cable car. In the sky the full moon framed by the stars and down in the valley the lights from Obertraun and Hallstatt are flashing. These seem like a chain of lights, along the slopes of the Sarstein and on the lakeside at the foot of the Plassen.
