Gosau at Dachstein

Gosau, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Gosau at Dachstein, the small but picturesque village at the southernmost point of Upper Austria, is well embedded in the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut.

Gosau is a real natural gem in the Dachstein Salzkammergut. Gosau am Dachstein does not resemble a typical village at all, as the valley stretches a long 14 kilometers to the Gosau lakes, where you can look out over the Dachstein glacier. Mountain lovers, bikers and families are right in the middle of this natural spectacle. In summer and winter alike, you can quickly reach lofty heights or one of the many Alpine pastures. The valley itself is dotted with pretty houses and guesthouses, with space and air for relaxation and outdoor action everywhere in between.

More about Gosau and why it's worth spending your vacation here.

The hiking paradise in Gosau am Dachstein

Whether you come over the Gschütt Pass from Salzburg or through the Gosauzwang from Bad Goisern, once you arrive in the Gosau Valley you are immediately overwhelmed by the special beauty of the landscape. The imposing mountain range that rises up at the end of the valley - the Gosaukamm- is truly impressive. What was once considered a coral reef in prehistoric times is now a popular area for hiking and climbing enthusiasts. But not only the Gosaukamm offers a variety of hiking routes, the surrounding peaks and alpine pastures are also popular destinations.

A real natural gem and therefore a special destination is definitely the Löckensee blanket bog. This unique small natural moorland lake, surrounded by Legföhren and numerous alpine grasses, is always worth a hike. The best way to explore the Deckenhochmoor is on a guided hike. You will also pass the historic grinding stone quarries and the legendary "Wildfrauenloch".

Another highlight is the Gosaukamm cable car. This takes you directly from the Vorderer Gosausee lake to the Zwieselalm hiking paradise. The easy ascent offers everyone, big or small, young or old, the perfect opportunity to enjoy the alpine expanses, the wonderful alpine pastures and the wonderful 360° panoramic view all the way to the Großglockner.

The eye of God - Lake Gosau

If you hear someone in Gosau talking about "the eye of God", they are not talking about religious statues or even a church, no! We are talking about the unique Lake Gosau with the majestic King Dachstein behind it. The view over the small, protected mountain lake with the Dachstein, the highest mountain in the Salzkammergut, in the background is probably one of the most famous photo motifs in the region. The reflection of the Dachstein glacier in the crystal-clear glacier water of Lake Gosau is a true natural spectacle that is a must-see.

Our Gosau tip: An easy hike along Lake Gosau offers you incomparably beautiful views of the Dachstein and the surrounding mountains. The circular hiking trail is not accessible in the winter months due to the risk of avalanches! Click here for the local map of Gosau am Dachstein
