Panoramic guided hike to one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Dachstein plateau with a stop at the Gjaid Alm.

Guided hike to the peak of the Zwölferkogel

The Zwölferkogel (1979 m) is a rather rarely visited summit in the Dachstein area with many chamois and marmots. Our route leads from the valley station Gjaid Alm (1733 m) over partly well marked paths but also on unmarked trails towards the summit. Many small and larger dolines have to be bypassed and climbed over many a rocky outcrop.

At the summit of the Zwölferkogel the view of the Dachstein, Tennengebirge, Höllengebirge, Krippenstein and down to the Lake Hallstatt is simply breathtaking. The cross was initiated in 1996 at the suggestion of Hans Schilcher, the then innkeeper of the Gjaid Alm. Since then, many mountain fairs have been held on the "Zwölfer" and many hikers and ski tourers are happy to sign the summit book. After a rest at the summit, you return almost on the same path with a detour to the Soachenklamm gorge, which is known only to very few insiders. On the very chilly Gjaid Alm we fortify ourselves with the excellent hut food.

Important information and key data about the hike:

• Meeting point: 9:20 a.m. valley station Dachstein Krippenstein cable car
• Start: 9:30 a.m. until approx. 4:30 p.m. / 5 p.m.
• Technical data: 650 metres in altitude and 8.5 kilometres
• Requirements: easy to moderately difficult hike, partly on unmarked trails. Sure-footedness necessary.
• Pure walking time: approx. 4.5 hours, total duration about 6 hours.
• Dates: 18 August 2024  and on request
• Equipment: rucksack, sufficient drinks and snacks, sturdy hiking boots, hiking clothes, hood, gloves, sunglasses and sun cream, rain protection

The "Obertrauner Bergerlebnis"

As part of the "Obertrauner Bergerlebnis", from July to October, guided family hikes to high alpine tours on the Dachstein Krippenstein are offered. During sunrise and full moon rides, you will experience unique moments at over 2 000 meters. Enjoy the view of the World Heritage region Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut from the viewing platform 5fingers. Every Wednesday you can listen to the sounds of the “Weisenbläser” (musicians playing the trumpet), who glide across Lake Hallstatt on a “Fuhr” (traditional boat).
