Why Hallstatt is worth a visit

Even on the way to Hallstatt, you can see what makes this place so special: the sparkling Lake Hallstatt, towering cliffs and the sense that history has been unfolding here for thousands of years. Then the view of Hallstatt opens up – a place like a jewel on the lakeshore, set against the impressive backdrop of the Dachstein massif. Here in the Dachstein Salzkammergut, World Heritage, nature and living history come together in a unique way.

You gain your first impressions of Hallstatt on arrival at the historic market square. It is easy to understand how people used to live in this hard-to-reach community and you will well imagine the locals having to transport goods across the lake by means of a “Fua” (traditional wooden boat). Take a walk along the lake shore and admire the pretty, decorative houses and the little shops selling genuine local handicrafts.

Hallstatt changes its character throughout the seasons, but always retains its beauty. With its many sites of interest, including the bone house, the ancient burial ground and the world’s oldest salt mine, this is a community waiting to be discovered. The natural beauty of the surrounding World Heritage Region makes Hallstatt well-worth an extended visit.

The stunning landscape around Hallstatt is very varied, making the village a perfect base for hiking. Examples of local hiking destinations include the Echerntal Valley with its waterfalls and glacier garden. The Dachstein Krippenstein (mountain) is popular in summer as well as in winter. For those who enjoy boat trips, Lake Hallstatt will not disappoint.

There is access to the Hallstatt Salt mines either on foot or by mountain railway with numerous beautiful stretches of woodland along the way. At the top there are breathtaking views across the lake of Hallstatt and surrounding World Heritage Region from the “Skywalk - World Heritage View” platform.
