Rules of behaviour in nature

Rules of behaviour in nature

  • We don't leave anything lying around in the countryside and dispose of our rubbish properly.
  • We avoid disturbing the peace and show consideration for flora and fauna.
  • We stay on the marked paths.
  • We keep our beloved four-legged friends on a lead to protect other forest dwellers.
  • We observe the smoking ban and do not light fires.
  • We collect only as much berries and mushrooms as we need for ourselves.
  • We preserve nature and prefer to admire flowers in the green rather than wilted at home.
  • We pay attention to any signs such as forestry work or closures and observe them.

Frequently asked questions about hiking

You can order a hiking map with the villages Bad Goisern, Gosau, Hallstatt and Obertraun online at the tourist office on map order.

There are many huts and alpine pastures in the inner Salzkammergut, which are ideal for a stopover during your hiking tours and offer a great view of the mountain and lake landscape. Click here for an overview of all the hiking huts and mountain pastures in the Inner Salzkammergut.

A large number of hiking huts are available for overnight stays in Bad Goisern, Gosau, Hallstatt and Obertraun.

There are 7 things you should have with you on every hike: first aid kit, headlamp, bivouac sack, acoustic/optical signalling devices, mobile phone and power bank, hiking map, sufficient food (nutritious food and plenty of water). Further tips for your hike can be found at www.wandern-dachstein.at.

The hiking map of the tourism association lists 16 hikes which, depending on difficulty and ability, are among the most beautiful mountain experiences in the Inner Salzkammergut. These hikes are: hike to the Hütteneckalm (mountain pasture), east bank hiking trail, trail to the Hoher Kalmberg, hike through the eternall wall (Ewige Wand), hike to the upper Lake Gosau, hike to the Place of Happiness Löckermoos, Herrenweg, hike to the glacier tongue, hike through the Koppenwinkel, hike to the Heilbronner Kreuz, hike on the Zwölferkogel, crossing of the Sarstein, hike to the Salzberg, hike in to the Echerntal (valley in Hallstatt), hike up the Plassen.  You can order the free hiking map online on the website of the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut.

The Inner Salzkammergut is of course also a popular point for long-distance hiking trails. The Dachstein Circular Hiking Trail, the Salzalpensteig, the Salzkammergut Trail as well as the Northern Alpine Trail lead through the region.

We leave nothing lying around in nature and dispose of our rubbish professionally. We avoid disturbing the peace and show consideration for flora and fauna. We stay on the marked paths. We leash our beloved four-legged friend to protect the other inhabitants of the forest. We observe the smoking ban and do not light a fire. We collect only as much berries and mushrooms as we need for ourselves. We preserve nature and prefer to admire flowers in the open air rather than wilting at home. We pay attention to and follow any instructions such as forestry work or closures.

Blue mountain trails are easier paths, but they can also be narrow and steep. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are absolutely necessary.

Red mountain paths are mostly narrow paths, these are often steep and can have more dangerous passages. Short insured walking passages can be included from time to time. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are absolutely necessary.

Black mountain paths are very narrow and often steep and can be dangerous to fall. There are often insured passages and/or easy climbing sections that require the use of hands. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential.

Alpine routes lead into the free alpine or high alpine terrain and are not mountain paths in the conventional sense. They can have exposed, slippery and fall endangered as well as unsecured walking and climbing passages. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are absolutely necessary. If you have little hiking experience, we recommend that you contact one of our hiking and mountain guides.

There are two cable cars in the region. The Gosaukammbahn leads up to the Zwieselalm with an impressive view of the Gosausee and the Dachstein. The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car takes you up to the Dachstein high plateau, the 5fingers, the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave and Mammoth Cave. In Bad Ischl the Katrin cable car also takes you to the huts on the side of Bad Goisern.
