Dachstein Circuit Classic and Experience

Many people are still familiar with the Dachstein Circuit in its Blue, Red & Black variants. Since 2021, the blue circuit has been called the Classic and the black the Experience. The red route, which was basically the blue anti-clockwise route, no longer exists. The two routes Classic and Experience are not yet signposted, so they are ridden as GPS only tours. You can find the track on the right in this entry. Currently there are the variants Dachsteinrunde Classic und Experience - There have been changes to the route guidance and signposting. The 1st Dachstein Circuit Classic is already marked in the Dachstein Salzkammergut with the standardised, wine-red signposting. In the others, the familiar old signposting is still partially present. To be on the safe side, use the GPS track. The Dachstein Circuit Experience is only available as a GPX tour and is not signposted!

Tour description Dachstein Circuit Classic

Bad Goisern - Gröbming
The Dachstein Circuit Classic starts at the legendary Bikehotel Landhotel Agathawirt. Parking options for those not staying directly at the Agathawirt include the chained car park at Pötschen. From the Agathawirt, pass the petrol station and turn left at the next junction towards Leisling. After around 1 km, the first forest road branches off and the route continues along the "Großer Zlambach", past the Leislinghütte. After the first steep climb, we turn left towards Halleralm and Raschberg.
The first serpentines and climbs quickly get us into the bike flow. After a small shooting range, we turn right towards the state border, cross the Michlhall stream once and it briefly becomes trail-heavy. Then take a sharp left up the forest road. Passing a few high stands, we are largely in the forest until the forest road ends. Take a sharp right onto a wonderful but unfortunately short root carpet down to the forest road. We follow the path down to the forest ditch where we now have tarmac under our studs again. In the residential area, please activate the deceleration mode and roll through slowly.
Shortly afterwards, the golden gravel awaits us again and we ride comfortably straight ahead towards the ruins of Pflindsberg Castle. It's worth taking a detour - the view of Lake Altaussee from there is gigantic. After the Pflindsberg castle ruins, the descent gets faster and faster. At the end of the forest road there is usually a closed barrier - so cycle elegantly around it at an appropriate speed. We then find ourselves back on a local road that descends steeply towards Altaussee. Adjust your speed here too and admire the beautiful traditional Altaussee architecture.
At the bottom of the village, turn right at the crossroads after the Reischenböck nursery. (Left for those who want to take a short detour to the lake.) Continue straight on to the Schleichlmühle car park, where we take the exit and turn left off the main road onto Mößernstraße. We stay on this road for the next few kilometres under the Tressenstein, turn right at the Berta oasis and ride down into the heart of Bad Aussee.
We cross Chlumeckyplatz, ride past the Kammerhof Museum and turn into the roundabout. Leave the roundabout at the 2nd exit and continue straight ahead. After a short climb, we turn left towards the Protestant church and follow the road until it rejoins Bahnhofstraße. After the bridge, we keep right and turn left at the football pitch into Sießreithstraße. After a few more metres of asphalt, we turn right over a bridge to the company Holzbau Steinbrecher-Köberl and keep left past the Schützenhaus. From here we cycle on gravel paths again. At the ASZ Bad Aussee we cross the bridge on the left and continue on the marked cycle path on the right next to the railway tracks to the Ausseerland fishery. At the junction after the fishery, we turn right and follow the tarmac road to the Ödensee lake.
At the Kohlröserlhütte hut, we keep right and cycle around the Ödensee lake. We follow the gravelled road in the forest, soon the landscape opens up and we cycle through the moorland to Mühlreith. From here it's sometimes steep, sometimes leisurely uphill to the Steinitzenalm. (If you fancy a Steirerkrapfen or Brettljause, you will have to accept a short descent to stop at the Steinitzenalm). From the Steinitzenalm, we ride steadily downhill along the Almgrabenstraße to the Kragl junction, where we keep right again and ride past the Kraglhütte to the Salza reservoir.
We ride along this briefly and turn right onto the gravel road, which takes us to the Viehbergalm. The ascent to the Viehbergalm is rewarded with a view of the Dachstein glacier and a marvellous panorama. (A stop at one of the huts will definitely round off this experience!).
The descent takes you through the well-known ovens to Gröbming.

Schladming - Filzmoos
The mountain bike crossing from the Salzkammergut into the Enns Valley is a classic and the stop at the rustic alpine village on the Viehbergalm is an unforgettable moment. From the northern shore of the Salza reservoir, the route begins with a leisurely ascent along a well-maintained forest road. After approx. 5 km, the path becomes steeper and runs on relatively rough gravel to the Viehbergalmen mountain pass. After a refreshment stop, the route leads through the impressive Öfen (a steep rocky gorge) down to Gröbming and along the Enns upstream.
At the bottom of the valley, you make rapid progress and pass through several villages with farms and many traditional inns. Once you arrive in Weißenbach, the route alternates between little-used tarmac and gravelled mountain roads uphill to the high plateau of Ramsau. The moderately steep ascent to the Dachstein valley station is somewhat strenuous, but from the Brandalm you are rewarded with a wonderful view of the Dachstein. Now follows one of the most scenic parts of the circular tour - the route leads along alpine and meadow paths at the foot of the striking south faces of the Dachstein massif in the direction of Bachlalm. With a bit of luck, you might spot some curious marmots. From there, a paved alpine road winds down to the Filzmooser Landesstraße.

Filzmoos - Tennengau
Please follow the GPS track, description will be provided later.

Tennengau - Dachstein Salzkammergut
After the short but challenging ascent from the Neubergerhof to the Langeggsattel at 1,313 metres, a leisurely descent of approx. 5 km begins with short flat sections and two somewhat steeper sections into the Neubachtal valley. From the Schichlbauer, the tarmac road begins and we roll comfortably past the Gasthof Schilchreit, which invites you to stop for a bite to eat in its beautiful garden (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) to the Neuhausbauer, where we turn off to the right onto a gravel road, then uphill for approx. 1.5 km to the Unter Dürrmoosbauer, where we follow the flat tarmac road for approx. 0.5 km and then the gravel road for approx. 2 km along the gravel road (Sulzbachstraße) to the crossroads and then turn sharp left, follow the hollow path and continue to the Langfeldweg crossroads, where we turn right and roll downhill on the tarmac road to the Rauenbachstraße crossroads.
Here we can decide whether to turn left and stop off at the Dolomitenhof after approx. 200 m or stay overnight. If you don't want to stop for a bite to eat, turn right and cycle to the main road, where we turn right and stay on the main road towards Abtenau for approx. 3 km. At Leitenhaus we turn right onto the side road along the Lammer to Reitgut Lammertal and turn right here, where the ascent to Edtalm and Hornspitz begins. After a few steeper hairpin bends in the forest, we come to the last farms, where the forest track begins. A rest at the Edtalm is recommended before continuing to the Hornspitz.
Just before the ascent to the cable car station on the Hornspitz, we turn right towards the Zeishofalm, which invites you to stop for refreshments along the way. We then follow the forest road down to Pass Gschütt. At the main road, we descend a few metres and then cross the main road. Caution is advised here due to the often heavy traffic. At the small gravel car park, continue towards Gosau. Continue straight ahead on the Wegscheidstraße forest road to the Iglmoosalm junction (approx. 30 minutes away by biobike), where we descend towards Gosau. Once in the district of Ramsau, we cross the main road and then cross the Gosaubach stream once. After the Gosaubach, we continue to the right towards Vital Hotel Gosau. After the hotel, we cross the stream once and then take a sharp left towards the Gosaukamm.
In the Hintertal valley, we reach the main road again and ride a short distance to the right before crossing the main road and taking the residential road towards Gosauschmied. At the Gosauschmied inn, we cross the main road again and take a path diagonally left uphill that bends to the right and leads us over the small reservoir. This short hiking trail brings us back to the main road, which we follow to the left until we reach Lake Gosau, which awaits us with its unique panorama. The route continues along the eastern side of the lake by the wildly romantic Gosausee mountain ridge with the Dachstein. The road soon branches off to the left and we pedal uphill, mentally preparing ourselves for the climb that will accompany us for the next few kilometres. First of all, the route winds up the forest road, past the Ebenalm farm. After the Ebenalm, take another sharp left up the next hairpin bend. The forest road also passes the Löckernsee lake, which can be reached quickly after a few minutes' walk. The route continues past the Plankensteinalm alpine pasture area up to the managed Rossalm. A highlight without question. E-bikers be warned, there are no charging facilities at the hut - after all, we don't want diesel generators for our e-bike power at mountain huts.
After the hut, we continue on to the Stränhag and have completed the intensive part - we promise it will be more relaxed from now on. The descent on the long forest road demands our full concentration once again. Now we descend for several kilometres to the Waldbachstrub which, depending on the weather, welcomes us with more or less thunderous applause, er waterfalls. We continue to Hallstatt, which we can already see together with the Echerntal on the descent, past the Simonydenkmal, along the Malerweg to the main road in Hallstatt, where we then follow the cycle path to Obertraun. In Obertraun we cross the Koppentraun bridge and then turn left through the fairground area and follow the road to the Obertraun lido.
Through the lido we reach the car park and at the roundabout we take the second exit just before the level crossing and continue left towards Hallstättersee Ostufer. Straight ahead, past Hallstatt railway station, over the lake on a spectacular suspension bridge until the path forks and we turn right up the steep ascent. At first we cycle on a forest road which later changes into an asphalt road. At the next junction, we take a slight left downhill to Seeraunzen, from here we continue along the shores of Lake Hallstatt to Bad Goisern. Now continue straight ahead for one kilometre. Finally we come to another junction in the Untersee district of Bad Goisern, where we turn right and then left after 20 metres over a bridge. We pass the Dirt Bike Park Arikogel and the road until we reach the main road. Once we have crossed the road at the zebra crossing, we are back on the cycle path that takes us to Bad Goisern. Once again through Bad Goisern and we are back at the starting point, the market square in Bad Goisern. Tired but happy, packed with great memories

1. The tours presented for hiking, walking, biking and road biking, mountain biking, motorbiking, horseback riding, climbing, cross-country skiing, and going on skiing and snowshoe tours etc. are to be considered non-paid tour recommendations and only serve as non-binding information. We have no intention of concluding a contract with the users of this website. The utilisation of the data does not lead to the establishment of a contract with us.

The data may only be used for private use; any commercial use is prohibited. In particular, it is not permissible to offer the data on commercially run websites, file-sharing platforms etc. or to use it to develop commercial products. Downloading data does not imply that users are granted rights to the data concerned.

The tour recommendations posted were created with utmost care; nevertheless, we assume no liability for the correctness and completeness of the information.

We point out that neither the tour recommendations included on this website nor the associated data and information were posted by us, but rather by third parties (Art. 16 Austrian E-Commerce Act). We have no influence on whether the details provided (e.g. distance, level of difficulty, change in altitude, description etc.) are authentic, correct and complete. We do not review these third-party contents. For this reason, we assume no liability for the authenticity, correctness and completeness of the information.

Construction-related measures or other influences (e.g. landslides and similar occurrences) can lead to temporary or permanent changes in a route (e.g. loss of a bridge and similar occurrences). Such occurrences can lead to part of the route or the entire route becoming impassable.

The use of the data as well as undertaking (riding, walking, taking etc.) the recommended tours or using the network of paths occurs at users’ own risk and on their authority. In particular, users themselves are responsible for the choice of route, outdoor orientation, adherence to traffic rules, supplies and equipment for tours listed in Point 1 (e.g. bicycle etc.), wearing a helmet, estimating their own fitness, recognising dangers and maintaining an appropriate velocity. We exclude ourselves from any liability whatsoever for damages, in particular accidents, that occur whilst taking part in the recommended tours.

2.Some of the tours lead over roads with normal traffic conditions. Please observe that there is an increased risk which can be avoided by means of appropriate attention and proper estimation and implementation of one’s own abilities. For this reason, please travel a route that is unfamiliar to you slowly and with special care. Pay constant attention to potential dangers and always observe traffic. Do not leave the routes featured in descriptions.

The potential use of private roads, in particular forestry roads and agricultural transport roads, can be subject to legal restrictions, which must be observed and adhered to.

The normal traffic rules apply. Each user (e.g. biker, motorbiker) is responsible for adhering to these rules and maintaining his/her bike/vehicle and its equipment (lights, brakes etc.) in good working order. Each user is also responsible for ensuring that he/she rides at a velocity that is appropriate for the conditions and his/her skill level and for maintaining sufficient distance to the rider in front. We explicitly recommend adjusting velocity to correspond to the respective field of vision, wearing a helmet, using reflective clothing (or similar) and employing bicycle lights in line with regulations.

3.Each tour requires good physical fitness as well as detailed planning. We explicitly recommend only taking the tours in the case of optimal healthiness.

We recommend that you conclude an accident and liability insurance policy. Use an onboard computer that displays the respective kilometres travelled per day and is calibrated for the front wheel.

4.Special for mountain bikers – Fair-play rules:

Mountain biking is one of the most wonderful outdoor leisure-time activities. Whilst biking or on a mountain biking tour, mountains and lakes, meadows and cabins are re-discovered in new ways. A couple of rules for fair play in the forest help to avoid conflicts whilst mountain biking.

a.Pedestrians have the right of way: We are accommodating and friendly to pedestrians and hikers. Upon encountering these fellow travellers, we alert them by using the bicycle bell and slowly overtake them. We avoid paths with heavy pedestrian traffic altogether. Take nature into account: We do not leave refuse behind.

b.The braking distance should be half of the total distance visible: We ride at a controlled pace, are ready to brake and maintain a braking distance half as long as the total distance visible, especially in curves, because we always have to count on obstacles on the path. Damage to the path, stones, branches, wood piles, grazing livestock, cattle grids, barriers, tractor-type forestry machines and authorised vehicles pose dangers that we need to be ready for.

c.Don’t drink and drive!: Do not drink alcohol when mountain biking. Take care at stop-off points (dealing with bike racks, dirty shoes or clothing).

It is obligatory to provide first aid!

d.Marked routes, closed paths and blockades: Keep to the marked routes, observe the blockades and accept that these roads are primarily for agricultural and forestry use!

Blockades can often not be avoided and are in your own interest. Biking beyond the intended path and outside of opening times is punishable and turns us into illegal bikers.

e.We are guests in the forest and behave accordingly, including vis-à-vis forestry and hunting staff. Whilst mountain biking, mobile telephones and music players are forbidden! Biking requires your full attention.

f.Avoid unnecessary noise. Out of consideration to the animals living in the wild, we only bike during full daylight. As a principle, we always wear our helmet (even when riding uphill)! Don’t forget emergency supplies: We always have a repair set and bandages along.

g.Don’t overestimate your skills: We should not overdo it when it comes to biking technique and physical fitness. Take the level of difficulty posed by the route into consideration and make a precise estimate of your experience and skills as a biker (braking, bell, lights)!

h.Close gates: We approach grazing livestock at a walking pace and close every gate behind us. We should avoid causing escape and panic reactions in the animals. Nothing stands in the way of the fun and athletic challenge in the mountains and forests!

i.Traffic rules: The general traffic rules (StVO) apply for all the mountain biking routes and we adhere to them. Our bike therefore needs to be in perfect technical condition and equipped in line with the traffic rules, including brakes, a bell and lights. We inspect and service our mountain bikes regularly anyway.
