Ski touring in Dachstein Salzkammergut

That perfect feeling of togetherness -  the mountain and me. Snow crunching beneath your skis, a glimpse of your destination in the distance, the sense of rhythm in nature and weaving your way through the powder snow – that is ski touring in the Inner Salzkammergut.

Long before there were any ski lifts, we had to reach the mountain summits on skis. Ernest Hemingway was a well known fan of ski touring. In order to get a better grip in the snow whilst gliding uphill, we once had animal hide stretched on the underside of our skis, but nowadays the „hide“ is made from artificial materials.

Ski touring is a very healthy pastime and is an environmentally friendly type of sport, which allows us to get close to nature too. Compared to downhill skiers, touring skiers have notably less stress. You can venture out on your own or in a small group and enjoy your beautiful mountainous surroundings and the views towards the Dachstein in perfect tranquility.

Ski touring is also a perfect work-out for your entire body. When skiing uphill, certain groups of muscles are used which can then relax during the less strenous mountain ascent when others take over. Your heart and circulatory system benefit too from being out in the fresh air. Weaving a trail down to the valley through fresh powder snow, stopping off for refreshments in mountain huts otherwise unreachable, and far from the downhill ski slopes. All this is what makes ski touring in the Salzkammergut so special.

Attention on your ski tours

One of the possible risks to ski tourers is of avalanches, even in powder snow. It is the touring skier's own responsibility to ensure they are adequately prepared for their planned tour! We strongly recommend that you contact one of the many outdoor pursuits companies who know the entire Dachstein region like the backs of their hands and seek information on current snow/weather conditions.
