Hallstatt

Hallstatt, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The World Cultural Heritage site Hallstatt is considered one of the most beautiful villages on a lake in the world. Embedded in the mountain and lake landscape of the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut, the small village enchants with its unique traditional charm.

Hallstatt is the archaeological heart of the World Heritage region. The oldest salt mine in the world is located here. The historic town centre exudes a unique flair with its promenade right on the shores of Lake Hallstatt.

Visitors from all over the world are drawn to Hallstatt to visit the unique original sites. The houses arranged like swallows' nests between the lake and the mountain, the high valley with the salt mines, the magnificent views and cultural sights that tell thousands of years of history, the Echerntal valley that offers a natural experience.

More about Hallstatt and why it's worth coming here.

The World Heritage town of Hallstatt

Starting at the beginning of Seestraße towards the centre, you get your first beautiful view of the Lake Hallstatt and the traditional houses in Hallstatt.

The marketplace in Hallstatt is certainly famous, as it was also recreated in Asia, more precisely in China in the province of Guangdong. But ending the tour of Hallstatt there would be a mistake. Unique in the world and steeped in history is the ossuary at the Catholic church. If you want to delve even deeper, visit the Hallstatt Museum.

Archaeology on the Salzberg

A must-do in Hallstatt is definitely the drive or hike up the Salzberg. There you will find archaeological finds from the Hallstatt period as well as the oldest salt mine in the world.

A little more courage is required on the Skywalk and the World Heritage View viewing platform, which is made entirely of glass and hovers 200 metres above Hallstatt. From here, you have a breathtaking view of the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut World Heritage region and Lake Hallstatt in the centre.

Active in winter

Hallstatt not only offers culture and history, but also numerous nature experiences. On a winter hike into the Echerntal, you can enjoy the peace and quiet and nature to the full. The Dachstein Krippenstein is only a 10-minute drive from Hallstatt, the family ski area Dachstein West in Gosau am Dachstein just 15 minutes away. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or ski touring, you are sure to get your money's worth.
