Advent, Advent, a candle is lit...
...first one, then two, then three, then four, and suddenly the Christ Child is knocking on your door. The "Advent" time starts with the first Sunday in December and has it's highlight in Austria on December 24, the birth date of the Christ Child. We enjoy this special time of the year with our families, friends and beloved ones and invite you to experience the unique Christmas atmosphere.
Advent in the Salkammergut
Events for Advent begin with the simple and traditional „Gosauer Berg-Weihnacht“ (Christmas market). Throughout the first two weekends in Advent, the area around the Museum of local history is transformed into a magical Christmas scene.
The aroma of punch and the smell of the crackling bonfires are truly inviting. There are horse-drawn sledge rides, Christmas carols, traditional local handicrafts for sale and much, much more. On December 1, visitors flock to Obertraun and eagerly await the arrival of St Nicholas who crosses the lake Hallstatt to visit the children.
As we are so very brave, we visit the Salzkammergut „Krampuslauf“ (Procession) in Bad Goisern on December 7. Over 1000 „Krampusse“ and „Perchten“ (evil characters who whip us with sticks!) will be waiting for us!
Hallstatt, the romantic World Heritage Village on the lake Hallstatt, invites us on December 8 to it's traditional Christmas Market. The lightened Christmas tree, the three dimensional nativity scene, traditional music, Salzkammergut handicraft and traditional delicacies transform Hallstatt into a romantic Christmas scene.
The second weekend is all about the craftmen of the Salzkammergut and their self-made products. In the castle Neuwildenstein, the "Meisteradvent" (Christmas market) takes place and invites you to see the craftmen working and to buy original Salzkammergut handicrafts.
